Going on a group trip, with everyone paying for different things and nobody quite sure who owes who? Let’s not turn the holiday into a merry-go-round of “I owe you, but she owes me, and didn’t you pay for the taxi?” Splitwise is my pick for keeping the bills straight without making someone the group’s full-time accountant—even the free version can do the important bit.
Only five out of eight people went to dinner, or shared that ridiculously expensive bottle of wine? No problem: choose who’s included in each expense and split it just between them. You can enter exact amounts or different shares when an equal split doesn’t make sense, and add the wine separately so the people who didn’t drink it aren’t paying for it.
As everyone adds what they paid, Splitwise keeps a running tally of who owes what. Turn on “Simplify debts” in the group settings and it works out fewer payments to settle up, instead of everyone sending money round in circles. You still need to make the actual payments and record them, but the mental gymnastics are taken care of.

The free tier covers shared expenses, flexible splits and debt simplification, but currently limits each person to four new expenses a day. If you’re logging lots of little bills, that’s worth knowing before you go.
